Measures of Student Achievement and Success

Report cards are issued 2 times per year for all students, in February and June. There is a progress report in November as well. At all levels, information about student achievement is gathered through a variety of means, which may include some of these strategies: observation, formal and informal testing, group and individual work, special projects and daily assignments and discussions.

Junior kindergarten children are involved in Early Identification Screening prior to beginning school. Parents of junior kindergarten and senior kindergarten students are invited to visit the classrooms in the fall or winter term to observe their children participating in the class group. Senior Kindergarten students are also assessed by their classroom teachers throughout the year using the Early Literacy Observation Tool (ELOT).

Near the beginning of each year, academic assessments are conducted by all classroom teachers. Assessment results are used to help teachers meet the needs of the students and to determine areas of strength and weakness. Teachers consult with the Special Education team in the school as necessary to determine the most effective programming for success for individual students. Provincial mandate requires EQAO testing for grade 3 and grade 6 students in mathematics and reading and writing. To assess proficiency in reading all primary teachers use the PM Benchmarks assessment tool (English) or the GB+ assessment (French). Junior teachers use the CASI assessment.

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

The following areas continue to be areas of focus for school improvement:

• Focus on improved student achievement in the area of Mathematics

• Continue to focus on student well-being  and provide a variety of "tools" to
improve mindfulness so they are better equipped to self-regulate and self-advocate so they are able to learn in a meaningful way

• Continue to make improvements to the physical environment of our school (e.g., school yard, Learning Commons, learning anywhere) to enhance our facility
